![]() While there is no more ROM BASIC to default to, the message provides a good troubleshooting tool in that you know the system could not find the boot files it needed to start up. This message is left over from the very first PCs that defaulted to a ROM-based BASIC programming tool when no bootable disk was found. If the BIOS checks through the complete list of CMOS boot drive options and does not find an MBR, it will produce a message that might read "NO ROM BASIC- SYSTEM HALTED". The first boot sector that the routine encounters that has an MBR is the one that will be used to boot the system. This program checks for an MBR in the boot sector of each drive in the order it has been instructed to search. ![]() If the local boot sequence is not preempted by a network redirection, the BIOS routine executes a Disk Drive Interrupt Service Routine to activate the primary bootstrap loader program. ![]()
